A newborn's skin is thinner than ours. It dries out faster, reacts faster, and spends almost the whole day against fabric. That makes the cloth you choose one of the quiet decisions that really matter.
What to look for
- Breathable natural weaves, cotton and muslin above all
- Flat or covered seams, especially along the shoulders and inner legs
- Fastenings at the front or side, so you are not turning a sleeping baby over
- A little room to grow, without so much that fabric bunches
What to be careful with
Stiff embroidery and applique look lovely in a photo and scratch all afternoon. If a piece has decoration, check the inside of it, not the outside.
Strongly perfumed detergent is the other common culprit. Wash new clothes once before the first wear, and skip fabric softener for the first few months.
A simple test
Hold the fabric against the inside of your own wrist for a minute. If it feels warm or rough there, it will feel worse to a baby who cannot tell you.
